The top 5 challenges that will face 5G
- 16 Jun, 2019
The 5G technology is coming in a critical time where technology is set to play a larger role our lives than ever. Homes are becoming smart, vehicles are becoming autonomous and internet is being integrated in every device.
The high speed of 5G Internet can finally be enough to replace the wired connections at homes, with speeds reported to be up to 100 times faster than 4G at 10 gigabits per second. This means that what takes three minutes on 4G takes two seconds on 5G which is why the technology is impressive and much anticipated. But beside this, there will be many features depending on the technology that will benefit a large number of people.
And because every new technology comes with new challenges, the impressive speed of 5G networks will face some challenges to reach everyone.
Different frequency bands
5G requires frequencies up to 300GHz which means that new bands are needed instead of the ones available now for 4G. An enormous amount of money is being invested for this reason.
Extending coverage
While 5G comes with much more speed, its infrastructure is different from what we have seen the past. The higher frequencies now can only travel shorter distances meaning that antennas and base stations will be needed in larger numbers and will be covering smaller areas despite having small sizes.
Extra signal repeaters will be also needed in densely populated places, and all of this only mean that the coverage of 5G will be one of the biggest challenges facing the technology becoming everywhere quickly.
Very high building cost
The amount of money invested to build network infrastructures is very big and this is why we could see carriers raise bills to compensate this money. The global spending on 5G is set to reach 88 billion dollars by the year 2023, according to reports.
Number of devices needing support
Smartphone companies didn't wait for anything of all of this and they will just release 5G enabled phones in 2019 including the giants Samsung and Xiaomi offering variants of their flagships with 5G support this year.
Many companies are already investing big amounts of money on developing autonomous vehicles, and 5G would offer the awaited ridiculously fast speed needed so the deployment of 5G would be a great push for autonomous vehicles. Not just autonomous vehicles but every internet of things device needing high speed to transfer data and media.
Security is a bigger concern
The security threat was hacking phone calls or messages in the past, but know it is becoming more like hacking everything. This puts great pressure on companies which need systems and devices without any security issues or bugs.
